Police Investigation into the Oleg Pokhanovski Sexual Assault Case
The Winnipeg Police Service Sex Crimes Unit began investigating in February 2025 after receiving a referral from another Canadian police agency.
Investigators allege that between December 17, 2007, and March 11, 2010, Pokhanovski, then 37, gave private music lessons to a 15-year-old girl. Police say he groomed the teenager and later sexually assaulted her on multiple occasions.
Authorities report that the alleged assaults took place off campus. The victim reportedly attempted to cut off contact in March 2010, but police allege Pokhanovski continued emailing her in an effort to reconnect.

On July 29, 2025, Pokhanovski, now 55, turned himself in at Winnipeg Police headquarters, where he was arrested. He remains in custody pending further court proceedings.
University of Manitoba’s Response
The University of Manitoba confirmed Pokhanovski has been placed on leave.
“We take this matter very seriously and are cooperating fully with the Winnipeg Police Service,” the university stated in an email.
“The accused has been placed on leave. Specific questions should be directed to WPS.”
