As advanced AI models become better at understanding different types of input — such as text, voice, and images — and converting them into nutritional data, fitness apps that let people log their food using these methods have exploded in popularity. We have seen new startups like Almaand Cal AI — along with existing apps like LifeSum, Healthify, MyFitnessPal, and MyNetDiary — either launching new apps or adding new functionality around nutritional tracking. Now, strength training app Ladder is throwing its hat into the ring by launching its own calorie-tracking platform called Ladder Nutrition within the main app. Like…
Storied investors Accel and Prosus have launched a new investment partnership to back Indian startups from day zero, targeting founders building large-scale solutions with the potential to serve the masses in the South Asian nation. Both firms will co-invest from a startup’s earliest days, with a focus on companies addressing systemic challenges across sectors such as automation, energy transition, internet services, and manufacturing. India, the world’s most populous country with over 1.4 billion people, is seeing rapid growth in its digital economy. The country…
The family safety app Life360 is venturing into pet tech with the launch of its new tracking device, the Pet GPS. Designed to attach to a collar or harness, this new device aims to offer pet owners peace of mind by delivering real-time location updates for their dogs and cats. The launch of the Pet GPS feels like a natural evolution for Life360, particularly following its acquisition of the tracking device company Tile in 2021. Since then, the company has integrated Tile’s item-finding capabilitiesinto its app, including the ability to assign a Tile tracker to their pet. Retailing at $49.99,…
U.S. President Donald Trump announced an additional 10 per cent tariff on Canada on Saturday because the Ontario government didn’t immediately pull down an anti-tariff ad it was running in U.S. markets. “Because of their serious misrepresentation of the facts, and hostile act, I am increasing the Tariff on Canada by 10 per cent over and above what they are paying now,” Trump said a post on his social media platform Truth Social. “Their Advertisement was to be taken down, IMMEDIATELY, but they let it run last night during the World Series, knowing that it was a FRAUD,” Trump said…
A high school student in Baltimore County, Maryland was reportedly handcuffed and searched after an AI security system flagged his bag of chips as a possible firearm. Taki Allen, a student at Kenwood High School, told CNN affiliate WBAL, “I was just holding a Doritos bag — it was two hands and one finger out, and they said it looked like a gun.” But as a result, Allen said, “They made me get on my knees, put my hands behind my back, and cuffed me.” In a statement shared with parents, Principal Katie Smith said the school’s security department had…
Rivian is reportedly cutting another 600 workers in its third layoff of the year, or about 4% of its total workforce, according to The Wall Street Journal. The company previously made cuts of around 100 to 150 workers in September and June to its commercial and manufacturing teams, respectively. Rivian declined to comment on what teams are affected by this new round of layoffs. The cuts come as Rivian is prepping to launch its all-important mass-market model, the R2 SUV, in 2026. The company plans to make as many as 150,000 of those EVs per year at its factory in…
Microsoft has a new Clippy, and it’s an AI friend called Mico. At the company’s Copilot fall release press event on Thursday, the company introduced a range of new features and updates for its AI chatbot, but one that telegraphed how the tech giant intends to bring AI to consumers was the official introduction of its AI chatbot’s “face” — an expressive avatar blob named Mico. The company explains that Mico (its name a nod to “Microsoft Copilot”) is meant to offer consumers a “warm” and “customizable” visual presence that “listens, reacts, and even changes colors to reflect your…
OpenAI announced on Thursday it has acquired Software Applications, Inc., the makers of an AI-powered natural language interface for Mac computers called Sky. The software product, which had not been released to the public, is designed to work alongside you throughout your day, as you use apps on the computer, writing, planning, coding, and more. Similar to AI browsers, Sky can see what’s on your screen and take action in your apps for you. The move is a significant step toward embedding OpenAI’s technology into consumers’ everyday lives and within businesses that run on Mac. “We’ve always wanted computers to…
On Friday, WordPress.com maker Automattic filed its counterclaims in the lawsuit initiated by hosting company WP Engine in October 2024. Which had accused Automattic and its CEO, Matt Mullenweg, of defamation and abuse of power. Automattic believes that WP Engine has been abusing the WordPress trademark and has engaged in deceptive marketing practices, without properly giving back to the open source community. As a result, Automattic took action against WP Engine last year, which included calling the hosting provider a “cancer to WordPress” and sending it a cease-and-desist letter claiming WP Engine had breached its trademark usage rules. As the battle continued, Automattic banned WP Engine…
Rivian has agreed to pay $250 million to settle a class-action shareholder lawsuit filed after the company suddenly hiked prices on its R1 pickup truck and SUV in 2022. The lawsuit alleged Rivian had included misleading statements and figures in regulatory filings in the run-up to its 2021 IPO about the costs required to build the R1 EVs. Despite agreeing to the payment, Rivian said in a press release that it “denies the allegations in the suit and maintains that this agreement to settle is not an admission of fault or wrongdoing.” The payment still has to be approved…
